Schools shut, highway blocked: Jammu division grapples with heavy rain threat

Jammu, Aug 31: Authorities have ordered the closure of all schools across Jammu division on Monday, September 1, as the region continues to face heavy rains, landslides, and a deteriorating weather outlook. This comes as the strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway remains blocked for the sixth consecutive day, severely disrupting traffic and supply chains.

“In continuation to earlier orders and keeping in view the incessant rains and landslides in hilly areas, it is hereby ordered that all government and private schools across Jammu Division shall continue to remain closed on 01-09-2025 (Monday),” read an official statement from the Director of School Education, Jammu. Authorities also confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored, and any further decisions on reopening will depend on weather assessments.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast persistent rain for the region through early September. Light to moderate rainfall is expected on August 31 and September 1, with isolated heavy showers in parts of Jammu. However, conditions are expected to worsen significantly on September 2, with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rain in Kathua, Doda, Udhampur, and Reasi districts. Other areas like Jammu, Samba, Ramban, Rajouri, and Kishtwar are also at risk of heavy downpours, with South Kashmir and Poonch potentially affected as well.

An official advisory has warned residents of flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts, and falling rocks, especially in vulnerable terrain. Citizens have been urged to avoid rivers, streams, embankments, and any unstable structures.

The continued closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway—a vital link to the Kashmir Valley—has left over 2,000 vehicles stranded and significantly disrupted the flow of essential goods. Prices of perishables like poultry have surged in the Valley, where supplies are beginning to run low.

Restoration efforts on the highway are ongoing, but with adverse weather persisting, there is no clear timeline for reopening. Authorities have advised caution and preparedness as the region braces for what could be a challenging week ahead.
