Australia, Sep 16: The Canberra Konkan Community began its Monthi Fest celebrations with a deeply spiritual 9-day Novena, a cherished tradition that brought families together in prayer, floral offerings, and shared meals. Each evening, a different family opened their home to host the community, creating a sacred rhythm of hospitality and devotion. This Novena culminated in the celebration of Monthi Fest—the feast of the Nativity of Mary— at St Benedict’s Catholic Church, Narrabundah on September 13, observed on the weekend following the traditional date of September 8.
This year’s Novena was especially meaningful, as the Canberra community collaborated with Karaval Konkans Australia Inc, opening one of the Novena days to Konkan Catholics across the country. This beautiful gesture of unity allowed faithful from North to South and East to West across Australia to join in worship, reinforcing the bonds of shared heritage and faith. The community extends heartfelt thanks to Karaval Konkans Australia Inc for this wonderful opportunity to connect and celebrate as one.

Monthi Fest is a deeply significant occasion for Mangalorean Catholics, rooted in centuries-old tradition. It beautifully blends faith, culture, and community spirit, offering a powerful way to pass on heritage to the next generation of Australian Mangaloreans—especially for those whose families remain in India.
Konkan, a coastal region in western India, is home to a rich Catholic tradition. The celebration in Canberra echoed this heritage, beginning with a solemn and culturally resonant mass led by Msgr Alfred Rayan D’Souza from the Apostolic Nunciature. The liturgy was enriched by melodious Konkani hymns, evoking a deep sense of belonging and reverence.
A highlight of the celebration was the active participation of community members across generations. Young and old came together in prayer, with roles such as the first reading and prayers of the faithful led by lay members, showcasing the community’s commitment to nurturing faith in every age group.
Following the Mass, a symbolic procession led to Collins Wing, where one of CKC Family of the community was honoured with the installation of the statue of Mother Mary—a gesture steeped in respect and tradition. The veneration ceremony that followed saw children and adults alike offering flowers, a touching expression of devotion and unity.
The spiritual celebration transitioned into a festive gathering, featuring a traditional Mangalorean meal served on banana leaves. The feast included a variety of authentic dishes and a beloved dessert, offering a taste of home and heritage to all present.
Cultural performances rounded off the day, with community members showcasing their talents through song, dance, and storytelling. These moments of joy and creativity reinforced the bonds of fellowship and highlighted the richness of Mangalorean Catholic identity.
Monthi Fest in Canberra was more than a celebration—it was a living testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition. Through prayer, food, and festivity, the community reaffirmed its commitment to passing on its spiritual and cultural legacy to future generations.
