Shillong, Feb 7: The death toll in the illegal coal mine blast in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has risen to 27 after two more bodies were recovered on Saturday, police confirmed.
The bodies were found during an ongoing multi-agency search operation in the Thangsku area of Umsngat village, where the explosion occurred on Thursday. Rescue teams continue to comb the site as several persons are still feared missing.

Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said efforts are underway to establish the identities of the deceased, while the search and recovery operation will continue until all missing persons are traced.
Meanwhile, police have registered a suo motu FIR at Khliehriat police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.
In connection with the incident, two persons have been arrested so far — Forme Chyrmang (36) of Jalaphet Pordung village and Shamehi War (42) of Sutnga Pohwailong village. Further investigation is in progress.
