New Delhi, Sep 16: The Centre late Monday night extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025–26 by one more day, following widespread complaints of glitches on the e-filing portal.

“The due date for filing of ITRs for AY 2025-26, originally due on July 31, 2025 and earlier extended to September 15, 2025, is now further extended to September 16, 2025,” the Income Tax department announced on X at 11:48 pm. It added that the e-filing portal would undergo maintenance from midnight to 2:30 am on Tuesday to enable necessary updates.

Minutes later, the department highlighted a new record in filings: “Over 7.3 crore ITRs have been filed till 15th Sept 2025, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore. We sincerely thank taxpayers & professionals for their timely compliance.”

Earlier in the evening, the department posted a guide to help users fix local system or browser issues, but many taxpayers reported persistent problems despite following the suggested steps.
