Violence over objectionable Rangoli in Ahilyanagar; 30 detained, govt promises strict action

Ahilyanagar, Sep 30: Maharashtra Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan on Monday assured strict legal action against all those involved in the violent protest in Ahilyanagar, regardless of community, after a Navratri celebration rangoli sparked communal tension.

Urging restraint, Khan said, “If we study the life of Prophet Muhammad, we will find that he always responded to hatred with love… Whoever they are, legal action will definitely be taken.” He confirmed that the person who created the objectionable rangoli had already been arrested.

According to Ahilyanagar Police, a group gathered outside Kotla’s Tofkhana Police Station after a complaint was filed about the rangoli. When police tried to disperse them, protesters allegedly began pelting stones, prompting a mild lathi charge. Thirty people were detained, and the area was later brought under control.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the violence and hinted at a larger conspiracy to create social unrest. “The way some boards are being put up, we will have to see if there is a conspiracy behind this… Everyone has the right to practice their religion, but it is wrong to create tension among people in this way,” Fadnavis told reporters.

Police have registered an FIR and launched a detailed investigation into the incident to determine if there was any organised attempt to polarise communities.
