Night shift youth face elevated kidney stone risk: Study shows

New Delhi, Oct 1: A new study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings warns that young workers on night shifts carry a significantly higher risk of developing kidney stones — about 15?per cent more than those with conventional schedules, particularly when their roles involve low physical labor and have lasted over longer periods.

Analyzing over 220,000 participants with a median follow-up of 13.7 years, researchers examined how the nature, frequency, and longevity of shift work relate to kidney stone events. They identified BMI, fluid intake, sleep quality, and smoking habits as key mediators in this association.

The underlying mechanism appears tied to the disruption of circadian rhythms caused by irregular working hours. Such disruptions can interfere with metabolic balance, hormone secretion, and routine behaviors — all of which may increase susceptibility to stone formation.

In a companion editorial, Dr. Felix Knauf of the Mayo Clinic emphasized that nearly all physiological systems are governed by the body’s internal clock. When that timing is altered, the regulation of water balance and solute excretion — central to kidney health — can go awry, laying the ground for stone development.

Kidney stone disease affects millions globally, with estimated prevalence ranging between 1?per cent and 13?per cent across regions. Apart from acute pain and urinary complications, it’s also linked to chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular risks.

These findings underscore the need to recognize shift work as a modifiable factor in kidney stone prevention. Interventions like encouraging hydration, maintaining healthy weight, optimizing sleep hygiene, and smoking cessation could help mitigate risk — especially for younger workers on night duty.
