Agartala, Oct 1: Six inmates, including five undertrial prisoners and one life convict, escaped from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in Tripura during the early hours of Wednesday, officials confirmed. The breakout occurred after the prisoners attacked a jail guard with sharp weapons as they were being taken out for breakfast and morning ablutions.
The injured guard, Bedu Miah, is currently receiving treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Following the escape, a large-scale search operation was launched, with multiple security teams, led by North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai, actively pursuing the fugitives. All police stations and security posts across North Tripura and neighboring Unakoti districts have been put on high alert.

Authorities have also requested the Border Security Force to tighten surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent the escapees from crossing into Bangladesh. Additionally, all exit points along the borders with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh have been sealed to contain the fugitives within the state.
The six escapees include undertrials Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, and Nazim Uddin, along with Sunil Debbarma, who is serving a life sentence for serious crimes including murder.
Notably, Narayan Chandra Dutta is a Bangladeshi national previously detained under passport violations, while Abdul Pata hails from Nilambazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district and was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for drug-related offenses.
The hunt for the escaped inmates remains ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to recapture them.
