Wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk moves Supreme Court seeking his release

New Delhi, Oct 3: Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court seeking his release after he was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26.

Wangchuk’s detention came two days after protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the Union Territory, which left four people dead and around 90 injured. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur Jail, Rajasthan.

In her plea, filed through lawyer Sarvam Khare, Angmo has challenged the validity of the NSA detention and sought immediate release of her husband. She also raised concerns over procedural lapses, stating that she has not yet received a copy of the detention order, which she claimed is a violation of rules, and that she has had no contact with Wangchuk since his arrest.

The Ladakh administration recently dismissed allegations suggesting Wangchuk’s detention was part of a “witch-hunt” or a “smokescreen” operation.

The Supreme Court is expected to examine the legality and grounds of the detention in the coming days.

Good luck to you Ms. Gitanjali. I’m sure you will win as God is always with the righteous. Evildoers will get their reward. Time will tell
