Manipur forces crack down on militants and smugglers

Imphal, Oct 5: Security forces in Manipur have ramped up their operations against banned militant outfits, apprehending seven insurgents and seizing a cache of arms, ammunition, and narcotics in a series of operations across multiple districts over the past 24 hours. The arrests were made in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kakching, targeting cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), a militant group with political backing from the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF). These groups have long been active in the Imphal valley, engaging in recruitment, extortion, and coercion, particularly in disputes involving financial recovery.

In a separate operation in Churachandpur district, security forces uncovered 2,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 16 lakh. The drugs, often known locally as Yaba or the "crazy drug," are a potent mix of methamphetamine and caffeine and are illegal under Indian law. The contraband was found in the home of a 44-year-old resident of Tuibong village. Churachandpur, which borders both Myanmar and Mizoram, has increasingly become a hub for cross-border narcotics smuggling.

Further raids in Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts led to the seizure of a significant arsenal, including a 9 mm carbine submachine gun, a .303 rifle, two pistols of 9 mm and .32 calibers, ten homemade bolt-action guns, a pull mechanism rifle, and a large quantity of assorted ammunition. Kangpokpi, like Churachandpur, shares an unfenced border with Myanmar, which has contributed to the region’s vulnerability to illegal arms trafficking.

Security forces continue to maintain high alert levels with intensified area domination and search operations, particularly in fringe and vulnerable zones. Vehicle movement along the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37) remains secure, with 346 trucks carrying essential goods passing through without incident. Authorities have also set up 114 checkpoints across both valley and hill districts to intercept illicit activity and monitor suspect vehicle movement. Enhanced convoy security is being provided through sensitive areas to ensure safe passage.
