Mangalore, Feb 13:
Corporate Affairs minister Dr M Veerappa Moily said that Mangalore has the potential to become the second commercial capital of India after Mumbai, and that the country is marching forward in trade and export activities in a rapid manner since January 2012.

He spoke after inaugurating ‘Export Vision 2020’, a conclave of all state exporters  organized by the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) at TMA Pai Hall on Monday February 13.

He added that 90 percent of the big corporate companies have felt India to be the best place for their operations. "The GDP of the country which is 85 trillion dollars now could grow up to 97 trillion dollars in 39 years, while China will attain 80.2 trillion dollars and USA 39.07 trillion dollars. The credibility of India should not be written off, and co-operation from exporters and others sectors is needed," he said and added, "Education should be designed keeping the future prospects of the country in mind."
He also asserted that no one should try to be in the comfort zone thereby killing the potentiality of export trade opportunities in India.

Later, speaking on the sidelines of the programme Dr Moily said that he has written a letter to the chief minister asking him to convene a meeting to notify the land acquired for the second phase of MSEZ which was earlier denotified. He claimed that 80 percent of the land owners were ready to give their land for industrial purpose as it fulfils the employment requirements in the region.

Higher education minister Dr V S Acharya, guest of honour, said that Mangalore could be the economic capital of the state on the grounds that economic and infrastructure system has developed in the coastal city in BJP's three-and-a-half year administration in the state. He sought the cooperation of the media in facilitating the materialization of important projects in the state.

"Since there is no nuclear fuel or any other source for generating power, importing coal was the only option. Hence, such alternatives should be supported, while also taking environmental concerns into consideration," he said. He also said that in the coming budget priority will be given to export sector by the state government.

Anup K Pujari, director general of foreign trade (DGFT) while delivering the keynote address said that there was a bilateral meeting with Iran on import and export trade to consider the Indian rupee as the mode of currency for export trades with India. "UCO bank has received a deposit of 25 percent of the amount received in oil import trade. A delegation will be sent to Iran from India to discuss the matter further," he said.

Delegates including those from shipping sectors, corporates and students were part of the day-long conclave.

Deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Walter D'Souza, chairman, FIEO, southern region, and convener of organising committee, Tamilvanan, NMPT chairman and convention promoter, Rafiq Ahmed, president, FIEO, K Tejomaya, coordinator, organizing committee, and M R Vasudeva, Mangalore airport director, KCCI DK district president Latha R Kini, KCCI Udupi district president Prasad Kanchan among others were present.

Well commented , Mr Pais, like
Sri Moily said it is better to live in reality rather than on myth. There were opposers to good developmental deeds in the days of yore too and bound to be there
today also. You have to take them in your stride and move along....

This is a good initiative by concerned. Coastal Karnataka holds enormous potential and can be a huge export hub. We are blessed with sunny weather all year around, plenty of intelligent manpower and human resources, port and airport.

Politicians should help this region reach its full potential keeping aside political differences.

Perhaps Veerappa Moily and V.S.Acharya are the only politicians today who can see the big picture while others pander to populist activism like opposing energy plants and SEZ.

If export oriented units come up here then our educated youth need not go to Gulf countries and work in pathetic conditions. I've seen BA BCom graduates cleaning toilet in gulf. If infrastructure develops in Coastal Karnataka such migration of our talent can be put to good use here instead of forcing them to go to Dubai only to clean toilets.

"Mangalore has the potential to become the second commercial capital of India after Mumbai" - Just introspect yourself for your statement. First get the IA status for airport and give good railway connectivity for the city from Bangalore.
