Pune, Oct 29: In an unusual and exemplary judgment, the Pune Motor Vehicle Court has ordered a 28-year-old man, caught driving under the influence of alcohol, to print and distribute 1,000 handbills highlighting the dangers of drunk driving at traffic signals across the city.

According to the Pimpri Chinchwad Police, the man was also fined Rs 10,000 under Section 23 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The offender had been caught driving in an inebriated state on July 22 this year in the Hinjawadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad.

A police officer from the traffic branch stated, “A case was registered against him under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. On Monday, the court imposed a fine and directed him to spread awareness among motorists by distributing 1,000 pamphlets against drunk driving.”

From January to September this year, the Pimpri Chinchwad Police have booked offenders in 2,984 drunk driving cases and submitted them to the court. The latest order is being seen as a creative approach by the judiciary to instill responsibility among motorists and discourage reckless driving under the influence.
