Sangli, Nov 11: In a tragic incident, four members of a family, including a pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter, lost their lives in a massive fire that broke out in Savarkar Nagar area of Vita town in Sangli district on Saturday morning.

Police identified the deceased as Vishnu Joshi (50), his wife Sunanda Joshi (46), their pregnant daughter Priyanka Yogesh Ingle (25), and Priyanka’s three-year-old daughter Srushti. Vishnu and Sunanda’s son, Suraj (20), managed to escape unhurt after rushing out in time.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Vipul Patil, the fire started around 9 a.m. in a ground-floor multipurpose shop owned by the family. “The shop sold utensils, electronic items such as refrigerators and electric devices, along with mattresses. Initial findings suggest that the fire originated in the shop and quickly spread to the residential portion on the first floor,” he said.

Before fire tenders arrived, locals tried to douse the flames but the blaze intensified due to the presence of flammable materials in the shop. Fire brigade teams from nearby towns were called in, but by the time the fire was controlled, the four victims were found dead—apparently due to burns and suffocation.

“Preliminary investigations point to a short circuit as the likely cause,” Patil added. “A relative mentioned that there had been electrical issues in the house and shop for the past two to three days.”

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and police have registered a case of accidental death.
