Mangalore Air Crash Final Report Made Public

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI): Nearly two years after the Mangalore air crash claimed 158 lives, the final report of the court of inquiry (CoI) was on Friday made public, with the investigators blaming Capt Z Glusica for failing to discontinue an 'unstabilised approach'.

The CoI, headed by former Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Bhushan Nilkanth Gokhale, had found that the direct cause of the accident was Glusica's "failure to discontinue the unstabilised approach and his persistence in continuing with the landing, despite three calls from the First Officer (HS Ahluwalia) to 'go around' and a number of warnings from EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning systems)".

Though the main findings of the CoI had been given out on its submission in October 2010 itself, the entire report was put up on the directorate general of civil aviation website on Friday.

The report said the final touchdown of the Boeing 737-800 on the morning of May 22, 2010, was "at about 5,200 feet from the beginning of Runway 24, leaving only about 2,800 feet to the end of the paved surface, to stop the aircraft."

Soon after landing, the Captain had initiated a "rather delayed 'go around' or an attempted take-off, in contravention to Standard Operating Procedure laid down by the manufacturer, Boeing", the report said.

The aircraft had overshot the runway as its right wing hit the Instrument Landing System localiser structure. It then rammed into the airport boundary fence and fell into a gorge.

Among a series of recommendation to avoid such accidents and incidents, the CoI had sought the setting up of an independent civil aviation safety board "urgently, in view of rapid growth of aviation in the country".

Captain Z. Glusica is fully responsible for the landing which took the of lives of innocent and hard working people. Glusica who was presumed drunk as usual preferred to land without the taking the warnings of First Officer H.S Ahluwalia. He is a murderer of those killed in the accident. There was nothing wrong with the runway as I have traveled several times from different destinations to Mangalore even in bad monsoon weather but it was a smooth landing.

    Mr Jacob Nelson,

It was his fault. It was not his first time landing in Mangalore. And since the runway was commissioned in 2006, there was no such problem. It is people like you who scare people to stop flying to IXE.

i have been flying to mangalore from the past 10 years and i dont see that we have issue with the runway. Why all this while the flights landed without a single issue. I have been asking people to get together, it looks like people flying to mangalore do not have spine to start and fight for the victims.

We need DAIJIWORLD to at least bring the recommendations (included in the report) to its readers. Also, daiji can do a service on reporting how much the victims of this crash have been paid till date comparing it with the entitlement as per IATA rules. As well as inform the readers about the role of Insurance agencies and their dealings with respective relatives.

    "investigators blaming Capt Z Glusica"

THEY ARE SURE THAT HE WILL NOT GET UP AND COME TO SAY THAT IT IS NOT HIS MISTAKE OR RUNWAY IS SHORTER THAN OTHER INTL RUNWAY ETC.
