Panaji: Portion of Junta House slab collapses amid ongoing safety concerns

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Dec 9: A portion of the fifth-floor slab at the 60-year-old Junta House collapsed, heightening anxiety among residents and business occupants. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

The ageing building had already been declared unsafe following a structural audit conducted by the Public Works Department (PWD). Authorities had initially directed that the premises be vacated by August 2. However, with no alternative accommodations provided, several occupants sought intervention from the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP). Many also approached the Bombay High Court at Goa, requesting relief and additional time to relocate.

The latest collapse has renewed calls for urgent attention to the structural condition of the building and clearer rehabilitation plans for those still occupying it.
