Goa fire department begins surprise checks on clubs, restaurants after Arpora tragedy

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Dec 10: The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services has launched surprise inspections across restaurants and nightclubs in Goa from Wednesday, aiming to ensure strict fire safety compliance and prevent incidents similar to the recent Arpora nightclub tragedy.

The inspections will be conducted in phases, with teams deployed to verify whether establishments possess valid No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and are equipped with functional fire protection systems. The move follows a meeting chaired by Director Nitin Raikar with senior fire safety officials on Tuesday.

“We will be more vigilant to weed out any possibility of a potential mishap. We are starting inspections to verify if establishments comply with fire safety norms and regulations in reality,” said Shripad Gawas, Divisional Officer, North Goa.

He further stated that checks will focus on validity of NOCs, proper entry and exit points, and overall emergency preparedness. Authorities warned that if any facility fails to meet fire safety standards, its NOC will be revoked immediately.

Inspections will continue across major hospitality hubs in the state in the coming days.
