Coastal Karnataka sees spike in viral fever; experts warn of asthma, skin issues

Mangaluru, Dec 12: Sudden changes in weather across the coastal region—intermittent rains, intense heat, and chilly mornings—have led to a noticeable rise in health-related issues. Cases of viral fever, asthma, and skin ailments have increased sharply, prompting the health department to issue a special advisory on pneumonia.

With frequent fluctuations in temperature, doctors are witnessing more patients with cold, fever, and persistent cough—symptoms commonly associated with viral infections. As November transitions into December, early winter chill has already set in, and officials warn that temperatures may drop further. The health department has urged the public to stay vigilant and take preventive measures.

According to Ayurvedic principles, special care is essential during winter, as conditions like cough, wheezing, and asthma tend to worsen. Expert say that detoxifying treatments such as Virechana can be taken under medical supervision during this season. He also recommends the use of herbs like bhoonimba, amalakki, pushkaranishta, and amruthaballi to support health.

Skin-related issues also become more common in winter. Allergies caused by flower pollen and natural changes often lead to itching and flare-ups of conditions like psoriasis. Experts have advised individuals with chronic skin conditions to take extra caution during the cold season.

Blocked nose is a frequent complaint during winter. With more people breathing through their mouths due to nasal congestion, bacteria enter the body faster, leading to infections. Viral fever also tends to spike during this period. Dakshina Kannada district health officer Dr H R Thimmayya notes that senior citizens and young children are at higher risk and require special attention. The health department has intensified awareness activities through primary health centres.

There is also a rise in pneumonia cases among children. The National Health Mission has issued guidelines to raise awareness about early symptoms and preventive steps, especially since pneumonia can be fatal in children under five. In Dakshina Kannada, ASHA workers and schools are actively involved in spreading information through targeted campaigns.

Health officials urge residents to observe preventive health practices, keep warm, maintain hygiene, and seek timely medical help to curb the impact of seasonal illnesses.
