Andheri chawl fire claims one life, two others in critical condition

Andheri, Dec 28: A woman injured in a fire at a chawl in Andheri East last week has succumbed to her injuries, while two other residents continue to battle for their lives, civic authorities confirmed on Sunday.

The fire broke out at around 7.16 a.m. on December 21 at Vijay Nagar, located in the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar Chawl in Andheri East. According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the blaze was limited to Room No. 10 on the first floor of a ground-plus-one structure.

Firefighters said the flames mainly affected electrical wiring and installations, along with clothes and mattresses kept inside the room. Emergency teams responded swiftly and managed to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes. The fire was fully extinguished by 7.44 am.

One of the injured victims, identified as 45-year-old Veena Pradip Bhoite, was admitted to Kasturba Hospital following the incident. Hospital authorities later confirmed that she was declared dead at 10.03 p.m. on December 24 after her condition deteriorated.

Two other residents, Namdeo Sakpal and Laxmi Sakpal, sustained severe injuries in the fire. They are currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit at Kasturba Hospital and remain on oxygen support. Officials said their condition continues to be critical.

Authorities are continuing to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident as the affected families cope with the aftermath of the tragedy.
