Mumbai, Jan 1: Mumbai ushered in the New Year 2026 with a spell of rain early Thursday morning, as light to moderate showers were recorded in several parts of the city, including Mulund and Dadar.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai city and its suburbs are likely to witness a partly cloudy sky with light rain throughout the day. The unseasonal showers, coupled with chilly weather conditions, are expected to help improve air quality levels in the financial capital.

As per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 122 on Thursday morning, falling under the ‘moderate’ category.
Rainy start to New Year
Early morning drizzles greeted Mumbaiites on New Year’s Day, with residents later reporting heavier spells in some areas as the morning progressed. Visuals of rain-soaked roads and overcast skies flooded social media platforms.
The rainfall also led to a drop in temperature, with the mercury dipping to around 21°C, adding a winter chill to the otherwise humid coastal weather.
IMD outlook
In its latest forecast issued at 8 am on January 1, the IMD predicted light rainfall over Mumbai and its suburbs for the next 48 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 29°C and 16°C respectively over the next two days.
The weather agency further stated that there would be “no significant change” in the minimum temperature across Maharashtra over the next two days. However, it is likely to rise by 2–3°C during the subsequent four days.
