Mangaluru, Jan 3: Culture thrives when a community comes together to preserve it. For over eight decades, the Konkani Natak Sabha (KNS) has stood as a beacon of Konkani art, language and heritage. Founded in 1943, the Sabha has been a nurturing ground for countless singers, dancers, actors, playwrights, poets and artistes who have gone on to carry the richness of Konkani culture to national and international platforms. What began as a humble initiative has today become one of the most respected and enduring cultural institutions in the Konkani world.

Throughout its long and inspiring journey, the Konkani Natak Sabha has remained deeply committed to preserving cultural traditions while also encouraging creative innovation. Its stage has witnessed the earliest performances of many artistes who later became celebrated names in Konkani theatre and music. By offering consistent opportunities for expression and learning, the Sabha has ensured that talent is discovered, refined and confidently presented to the world.

With the unwavering support of the community, the Konkani Natak Sabha has successfully organised a wide range of cultural competitions and programmes. These include sixty-one singing competitions, twenty-three poetry competitions, twenty-three dance competitions, fifty-seven elocution competitions, four Voviyo verse competitions and two Gumtam Gayan competitions. Alongside these events, the Sabha has hosted numerous dramas, skits and fancy dress programmes, and has produced more than one hundred and ninety social, historical and religious dramas. Each of these initiatives has contributed significantly to strengthening Konkani cultural identity and passing its values and artistic traditions from one generation to the next.

As the cultural landscape continues to evolve, sustaining such meaningful initiatives requires renewed energy and collective responsibility. Organising quality cultural programmes, nurturing young talent, maintaining artistic excellence and planning future projects involve considerable effort and resources. To continue this noble mission and to expand its cultural outreach, the Konkani Natak Sabha is launching the ‘Kumke Hath Abhiyan’, a heartfelt appeal inviting everyone who cherishes Konkani culture to join hands in support.

‘Kumke Hath’, meaning ‘joining hands’, reflects the spirit of unity and shared responsibility that lies at the heart of this initiative. Through this Abhiyan, individuals are encouraged to contribute any amount, starting from just one hundred rupees. Every contribution, regardless of its size, plays a vital role in supporting future cultural projects, encouraging emerging artistes, preserving traditional art forms and promoting Konkani theatre, music and literature.
