Mangalore, Feb 23: Wahid, one of the two accused in the sensational rape case of a 13-year-old girl, surrendered here on Thursday February 23.
Interestingly, he surrendered after a media person spoke to him and coaxed him to surrender if he was guilty, sources said. However, the identity of the media person has not yet been ascertained.
Accordingly, Wahid surrendered before city crime branch inspector Venkatesh Prasanna at around 9 pm, after which he was handed over to the Bunder police who are investigating the crime.
The police arrested him and he is likely to be produced before the court within 24 hours.
The other accused, Mubarak, is still absconding. However, with the arrest of Wahid, the police may get information on Mubarak's whereabouts too and may locate him soon.
It may be recalled that Wahid and Mubarak went absconding after a 13-year-old girl revealed that the two had raped her for nearly a year. Following the revelation, high drama took place with the detention and later release of former mayor Ashraf for questioning, and immediate removal of police officer Ravindra Gadadi from the post of ACP for not handling the case appropriately.
