Mangalore: Dash of Glamour at Central Excise Day Celebration

Mangalore, Feb 24: The officers and staff of the local branch of Central Excise and Service Tax Commissionerate celebrated the Central Excise Day on Friday February 24 at Loyola hall, St Aloysius PU College here.

Sandhya S Pai, managing editor of 'Taranga' Kannada weekly was the chief guest. Pratap Reddy, IGP (Western Range) presided over the function.

Dr Rameela Shekar, professor and dean of Roshni Nilaya, K C Gupta, commissioner - customs, and M V S Choudary, commissioner - customs were present on the dais.

The presence of Pranitha, popular south Indian cine actress, added glamour to the occasion.

The function commenced with the lighting of lamp by Sandhya Pai. Choudary explained the working procedures, achievements and developments of the customs department.

Being tax compliant itself is a great achievement. People get a chance to be partners in the financial stability and get recognition for being a resource of the country, said IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy.

He congratulated the customs officers and staff for their contribution in bringing the positive changes in the department. He also praised the commissioners for organizing such a function and also for inviting three women guests for the programme, which mainly focused on the women power in the present society.

The police department, customs, excise are more of regulatory bodies. However, there has been a positive transformation as these departments are contributing towards national growth, he pointed out and added that people should co-operate with these departments as they are working towards getting discipline in the society.

Sandhya Pai in her address said, “Every rupee that is paid as tax is the sweat and blood of the common man. However, today we have to question whether the tax money is being utilised properly.”

She further added that everyone has the right to education and health. More importance should be given to education that makes one human, she stressed. She also said that that no organization can fail if it enjoys public support.

Former Central Excise Commissioner and novelist Giselle Mehta was felicitated for her achievements in the literary field.

Presidential awardees for this year, Central Excise Superintendent Srinivas Nayak and Department of Revenue Intelligence Officer Ramakrishna K were felicitated. Central Excise Inspector Dinesh Kunder, a national level athlete was also feted.

Noteworthy performers in different categories were honoured. Classic Fusion, Mangalore and Mega Bottling, Puttur were awarded under the Propritory firms.

Sai Developers were feted under the Partnership Firms and IOCL under the Public Sector Undertaking.

Ad Syndicate Private Ltd and Kumkum Special Poly Products were feted under the Corporate Houses category.

A cultural programme was also organized after the formal stage programme.
