Mumbai, Jan 28: Global technology major ABB has secured a significant order from Titagarh Rail Systems to supply advanced traction systems and Train Control and Management Systems (TCMS) for the expanding Mumbai Metro network.

As part of the contract, ABB will provide equipment for 40 metro trains, each comprising six coaches, which will operate on Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) and Metro Line 6 (Pink Line) — two key corridors aimed at boosting connectivity and cutting travel time across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Line 5 will run between Thane and Kalyan via Bhiwandi, while Line 6 will connect Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli.

Under the agreement, ABB will deliver an integrated solution including traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors, and TCMS software. Of the 40 trains, 22 will be deployed on Line 5 and 18 on Line 6.

ABB said the equipment will be manufactured in India, with converters produced in Bengaluru and motors manufactured in Vadodara, supported by local engineering, testing, and maintenance teams.

The company noted that the project marks its entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India, while also strengthening its strategic partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems, initiated in 2023.

The order also includes plans for industrial collaboration and phased co-production of traction components, aligning with the Centre’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

With this development, ABB is set to further strengthen its presence in the Indian metro sector, supporting energy-efficient, low-emission urban mobility solutions for fast-growing cities like Mumbai.
