Patna NEET aspirant case: Family demands judicial probe instead of CBI investigation

Daijiworld Media Network - Patna

Patna, Jan 31: The family of a female NEET aspirant, who recently died in Patna after allegedly being sexually assaulted, has demanded a judicial inquiry into the case, expressing dissatisfaction with the state government’s decision to hand over the investigation to the CBI.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, family members said, “We had not demanded a CBI probe; the government recommended it on its own. We want a judicial probe monitored by a judge of the Supreme Court or High Court to ensure justice. There is complicity between the administration and hostel management.”

The family alleged that pressure was being exerted on them and criticised the Nitish Kumar government’s claims of ‘Sushashan Raj’ (good governance), saying that common people were often ignored in matters of justice. “CBI will conduct the investigation the same way as the SIT is doing,” they added.

The case came to light after the victim’s post-mortem report, made public, revealed physical injuries and marks of violence on her body. The report did not rule out the possibility of sexual assault. Following the report, police arrested a staff member of the girls’ hostel where the aspirant had been staying. DNA samples were collected from 18 individuals, including family members, but did not match the suspects, prompting the government to shift the probe to the CBI amid mounting pressure to identify the accused.

The upcoming budget session of the Bihar legislature, starting February 2, is expected to witness intense debate, with the Opposition likely to question the government over the increasing incidents of crimes against women in the state.
