Navjot Sidhu’s wife quits Congress after suspension row

Chandigarh, Feb 1: Days after being suspended from the Congress over her controversial “Rs 500-cr suitcase” remark, former MLA and wife of ex-cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, on Thursday announced her decision to quit the party.

Making the announcement on social media platform X, Dr Sidhu said that capable and committed leaders within the Congress were not being heard. She launched a sharp attack on Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, accusing him of “damaging the organisation”.

Dr Sidhu alleged that Warring had “sold the party for petty gains” and claimed there was an understanding with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab.

Earlier, on December 8, 2025, the Punjab State Congress Committee had suspended Dr Sidhu from the party without citing any reason. “Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu is hereby suspended from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect,” the suspension order had stated.

The controversy erupted after Dr Sidhu remarked that the person who gives “a suitcase of ?500 crore” becomes the Chief Minister, a statement that triggered a political storm in the state. She had also said that Navjot Singh Sidhu would return to active politics only if the Congress declared him as its chief ministerial face in Punjab.

Following the remark, both the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party demanded that the Congress explain the serious allegation. Dr Sidhu, however, maintained that she and her husband had always stood for Punjab and ‘Punjabiyat’.
