Konkani Writers’ Association Literary Award 2026 bestowed on M Patrick

Media Release

Mangaluru, Feb 8: Fr Dr Joseph Martis, parish priest of Derebail parish, called on the Konkani-speaking community to cherish and actively use their mother tongue in daily life. Addressing the Konkani Writers’ Association Literary Award ceremony held at Sandesha, Mangaluru, on February 7, he said that while people have the ability to learn and master many languages, Konkani should remain central in homes, community programmes and worship.

He emphasised the importance of passing the language on to future generations, urging parents and grandparents to teach children Konkani just as earlier generations had done. Drawing comparisons with societies in Kerala, China and Vietnam, he noted that people there continue to use their mother tongue in everyday communication regardless of their level of education.

Describing Konkani as a rich language with abundant resources, Fr Dr Martis encouraged the community to preserve and make full use of it.

Criticism is essential for the growth of art and literature, but it must be constructive, said Walter Nandalike, chief editor of Daijiworld Media Pvt Ltd, while speaking as guest of honour at the event. He emphasised that criticism should be expressed responsibly and with appropriate language, aimed not at belittling creative work but at helping artists and writers refine and improve their craft.

Nandalike expressed concern over what he described as a trend among certain self-styled critics in Konkani circles who deliberately target writers and artists to undermine them. He noted that such attitudes harm the literary environment rather than strengthen it.

He also praised the Konkani Writers’ Association for honouring senior writer M Patrick, whom he described as a lifelong supporter of Konkani literature. Recalling Patrick’s dedication, he said the veteran writer had worked tirelessly to promote Konkani publications, at times going door to door to sell periodicals and books, contributing significantly to the spread of the language.

Senior writer M Patrick was presented the 2026 Konkani Writers’ Association Award, which included a formal felicitation and a cash prize of Rs 25,000. Accepting the honour, he expressed gratitude to all those who supported him throughout his lifelong journey in the field of Konkani literature. Several other achievers in the Konkani literary sphere were also felicitated on the occasion.

The programme began with a prayer song led by Anil and Irene D’Cunha. Dr Edward Nazareth welcomed the gathering, while Richard Moras, convenor of the association, outlined its aims and activities. Dolphy Lobo introduced the award recipient, and Preetha Miranda read the citation. The vote of thanks was proposed by Henry Mascarenhas, and the event was compered by Annie Castelino.

Among the dignitaries present were Stany Alvares, president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy; Roy Castelino, former president of the academy; Fr A D’Lima; J F D’Souza; Dr Gerald Pinto; and Alice Fernandes, along with several other veterans of the Konkani literary community.
