Dubai, Feb 9: Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison by an Iranian Revolutionary Court in Mashhad, her supporters said on Sunday, days after she began a hunger strike.

According to Mohammadi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, who confirmed the sentence on X, the court handed down six years for “gathering and collusion” and an additional one-and-a-half years for propaganda, along with a two-year travel ban. Iran has not yet officially acknowledged the ruling.

Mohammadi, a prominent human rights activist, has been on a hunger strike since February 2, highlighting the ongoing crackdown on dissent following nationwide protests across the country. Supporters fear her health could deteriorate rapidly given the extended strike and harsh prison conditions.

The sentencing underscores Tehran’s intensified measures against activists, particularly those who have gained international recognition for their advocacy.
