Mangaluru, Feb 11: Residents of Gurupura Kaikamba have launched a massive protest against the ongoing "unscientific" four-lane highway work on National Highway 169, which connects Bikarnakatte and Sanur. The villagers have expressed deep resentment toward elected representatives and officials for ignoring their long-standing demands regarding the project.
The highway project, being executed by the DBL company at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore, is a vital link connecting four grama panchayats, various government departments, educational institutions, religious centers, and the international airport. However, the construction of a "wall-type" flyover at Gurupura Kaikamba has become a major point of contention.

Unscientific design concerns
Locals, under the banner of the Nagarika Horata Samiti, have been submitting objections to the flyover design since 2004. They argue that a wall-type flyover acts as a physical barrier, effectively dividing the town and creating immense hardship for pedestrians and local businesses. The protesters are demanding that the department replace the current plan with a "pillar-type" flyover, which would allow for better connectivity and movement below the structure.
Warnings of intensified stir
Protest leader Harish stated that despite numerous memorandums submitted to the MP, MLA, and department officials, no action has been taken. "It appears that officials have kept our appeals under their pillows and gone to sleep. This project was designed in Delhi without understanding the ground reality or the geographical density of this region," he said.
The Horata Samiti has warned that if the design is not changed to a pillar-type flyover, they will intensify their struggle. Protesters have threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike and block the construction work entirely until their demands are met.
While the national highway expansion is a symbol of development, local residents argue that such projects only become effective when they align with the needs of the local population. It now remains to be seen how the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the concerned department will respond to the rising public outcry in Gurupura Kaikamba.
