Sullia, Mar 1: The body of Latif (50), living in a rented house in Natekal within Bellur gram panchayat in the taluk, was found hanging from a pole at Angadigudde in Subrahmanya on Wednesday February 29.

Latif hailed from Kollam in Kerala. He had reportedly converted into Islam for marrying Suhara, a teacher of Bellur government higher secondary school. He used to deal in furniture and electronic equipment. It is gathered that he had not returned home since February 26 evening.

When Suhara called him at 10 pm on Tuesday, Laltif did not give any details other than the information that he was in Karnataka. Suhara had heard some people around Latif speaking something then. She contacted her father in Idukki, who in turn called Latif, got confirmation from the signals that Latif was in Karnataka. When Suhara again called her husband on Wednesday morning, her call was received by Subrahmanya policemen who told her that her husband had committed suicide.

It is said that some local persons, who saw picture of Hindu gods tattooed on his hand, had questioned Latif about it recently. Later, there was a verbal altercation with a neighbour on this issue, it is gathered. Latif had also informed the police that he faced death threat.

Latif’s relatives say there were no compelling reasons for Latif to take this extreme steps. They have expressed doubts about his death.
