Udupi, Mar 3: Deputy commissioner of the district, Dr M T Reju, who also happens  to be the returning officer for the coming Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency, has advised the people to possess documentary proof in case they are carrying over a lac of rupees in cash.

“The Election Commission of India has issued notification relating to holding of bypoll for Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency on March 18 this year. Election code of conduct has come into force with effect from February 16, 2012. To enforce directives issued by the commission on November 13, 2011, check posts have been set up to monitor strict implementation of code of conduct. These check posts as well as mobile squads have been closely monitoring movements or people, cash, and goods. As per the code of conduct, offering the lure of money, liquor, and other incentives to voters is an election-related crime. Whenever the people have over one lac rupees in cash with them, they have to produce suitable documents to the officials at the check posts, besides informing the purpose for which cash is being transported," he said.

“In order to ensure that the people living in the constituency do not face undue inconvenience, we request them not to carry cash amounting to one lac rupees or more, without being backed by suitable records,” he said.
