Mangalore, Mar 6:
“Though the Narmada dam construction project was stopped after a tough agitation by the Narmada Bachao Andolan, lacs of farmers are yet to be rehabilitated and environmental conditions are yet to be restored. But again, sand mafia on the bank of the river is still a matter of concern,” said noted social activist Medha Patkar.

She was chairing an interactive session with students held at Roshni Nilaya on Tuesday March 6.

To a query, she said that the Gujarat government which claimed agitators had used foreign funds for the movement against the setting up of the canal lost the case filed with the Supreme Court. "Farmers are not ready to give their land as the thirst of the people of Kutch and Saurashtra has not been quenched," she added.

About the Delhi and Mumbai industrial corridor project, she said that 20,000 hectares of land will be used at a huge cost of $ 90 billion and this needs a ‘generation-long agitation’.

About MSEZ, Patkar said that ignoring the SEZ Act, the corporate industries acquired farmers’ land forcibly. “Corporate industries need to be opposed. Both the central and state government are making crafty efforts to notify the land which was de-notified by Yeddyurappa during his stint, which may be one of the best works done by former CM”, she said.

She said that in India, there is corruption in every developmental project as there is accumulation of money by corrupt and politically-backed officials.

Patkar also pointed out that just as there exists the ‘Below Poverty Line’, there should be ‘Above Poverty Line’ also wherein high tax should be imposed on the richest segment of people. “There is also need for guaranteeing Provident Fund and minimum wage for unorganized labor class people who constitute 96 percent of India,” she said and called upon journalists to conduct rapid investigative reports on the deep-rooted corruption menace.

She called upon the youth to take part in large numbers in the movement ‘National People’s Parliament’ (Rashtreeya Jan Sansad) to be held in Delhi from Monday March 19 to Friday March 23.

Being "social activist" is a very profitable profession in India. It does not need any qualification, investment. Lobbies which are interested in keeping India in the dark ages sponsor them, their awards as well.
One visit to Rajasthan will open your eyes regarding the Sardar Sarovar...barren land is now green. Likes of Medha Patkar are the making of the media. They do not have any agenda for development, just opposing everything.

To provide comforts to a few it is not just to up-root any inhabitants. The land owner will get money or alternate land and he will get settled. It is the hapless, landless, marginal land holders whose lively hood is affected.

Agree with Sri.Shetty. The thing Meaha Patkarji is that 'crusaders'(if that's the word to use) should know where to draw the line! Or else have an alternate agenda for development.

Maybe you dont, but sadly other'agitators' who mix with you have their own axe to grind or their own hidden agenda. For instance in this very picture a personality near you, was holding a 'responsible 'position in a PSU bank till some time back which has the accounts of almost all leading corporates!

This is nothing but having 'double standards'.It should always be remembered that while you 'point a finger at others 'four fingers' will be pointing at you! And in this country considering the present scenario,it's high time that Mahatma Gandhi is allowed to rest in peace.

Respected Madam Medha Patkar, you spoiled the entire episode of Narmada Dam Construction which was much required to feed water to “Kutch region” where people travel few kilometers to fetch water for their daily consumption. We would have worshiped your Idol at our home had you not indulged in protection against construction of Dam instead you should have fight for rehabilitation of people who lost home & property because of this Dam construction for which I support you where Gujarat Government did not succeed till date to accommodate or compensate them properly.

Always you take “Mahatma Gandhiji” name while at “Dharna” but failed to understand his principle of development where he always said that “Ready to sacrifice one village to save 10 villages and if required sacrifice 10,000 lives to save 1,00,000 people”

When our famous “Krishna Raja Sagar” Dam at Mysore designed and constructed by engineer Sir M.Vishweswaraiah, people of that villages gave over whelming support and vacated their villages happily
Who said Narmada Dam is stopped? Instead, height of the Dam has been increased by 2 meters and approved by Supreme Court too and Gujarat Government has been warned by SC to give proper relocation of villagers which is not happening as per their planning due to various reasons
