Mangalore, Mar 7: Ahead of the election of city mayor and deputy mayor scheduled to be held at 11.30 pm today at the city council hall, the ruling BJP has chosen its candidates for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor.

At the meeting organized at the district BJP office here, where different groups brought pressure for furthering causes of their own candidates, the party finally decided to vest the post of the city mayor with Roopa D Bangera, while that of the deputy speaker, with Amitakala. While the party has a lone corporator who meets the eligibility criterion for the post of the deputy mayor, there were many aspirants for the post of the mayor.

The government has already announced that the post of the city mayor has been reserved with lady candidate from backward classes – A category, and that of the deputy to lady candidate from scheduled castes.

This is the final year of the five-year term of BJP in the city corporation, and the rule in the last year will have a bearing on the results in the elections being held next year, it is felt.

Formal announcement about their election will be done after the election process being held under the supervision of Mysore divisional commissioner is completed.
