Mangaluru, Apr 9: Many of us visit a doctor only when we feel sick. But what we often forget is that many diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and even some cancers may not show symptoms early. It may be too late before it has already progressed to a severe form of the disease. Therefore, regular health check-ups are important. For healthy adults, a general health check-up is recommended once a year, while individuals with risk factors—such as obesity, family history, or chronic conditions—may require more frequent monitoring.
Now, what is preventive healthcare? It simply means taking steps to avoid illness before it happens. This includes eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, managing stress, taking vaccines, and going for regular screenings. Health planning is just being mindful and organized about these habits in our daily life.
Preventive healthcare is defined as the set of medical and public health interventions aimed at preventing the onset of disease, detecting conditions at an early stage, and reducing the risk of complications. It includes health promotion (lifestyle modification), specific protection (like immunization), and early diagnosis through screening and regular health check-ups. The goal is to maintain optimal health and minimize the burden of disease at both individual and population levels.
Health planning refers to a systematic and organized approach to identifying health needs by prioritising and implementing appropriate strategies to achieve optimal health outcomes at both individual level as well as community level.
In today’s world, preventive healthcare is becoming more important than ever. Our modern lifestyle — less exercise, more stress, and unhealthy eating — has led to a rise in lifestyle diseases. Preventing illness not only keeps us healthier by preventing complications but also reduces medical expenses and improves our quality of life.
As highlighted by organizations like the World Health Organization, prevention is always better than cure.
So, let’s make a small change—don’t wait to fall sick. Take charge of your health today. A simple check-up can make a big difference.
