Los Angeles, Aug 10: Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued its strong run at the global box office, collecting an estimated USD 144.5 million in the US and Canada during its second weekend, while Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey crossed the USD 1 billion mark, setting a new box-office record for the filmmaker.
The Sony-Marvel release has grossed USD 1.67 billion worldwide in just 10 days, putting it on course to become one of the biggest blockbusters ever.
In North America, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned USD 655.1 million so far, while its international collection has crossed USD 1 billion.
The film also became the fastest movie to reach the USD 1 billion mark worldwide this year, surpassing Toy Story 5, which had collected around USD 1.07 billion.
No Sony film had previously crossed USD 100 million during its second weekend. Brand New Day came close to breaking the record for the biggest second weekend ever, held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned USD 149.2 million in 2015.
Spider-Man crosses Rs 500 crore mark in India
The Tom Holland-starrer has also created a major milestone in India, crossing the Rs 500 crore gross mark, according to trade reports.
As per Sacnilk estimates, the film has collected around Rs 415.45 crore net in India. Its reported gross has already surpassed the earlier benchmarks set by Avengers: Endgame, which earned approximately Rs 445 crore, and James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water, which recorded a lifetime India gross of around Rs 477.50 crore.
With its continued run, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to establish a new record as the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India.
The Odyssey becomes Nolan's biggest hit
The Odyssey, released by Universal Pictures, added USD 31.5 million domestically during its fourth weekend, taking its worldwide total to USD 1.1 billion.
The Homer-inspired epic is Nolan's first film to cross the USD 1 billion threshold since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
It has now become Nolan's highest-grossing film worldwide, without adjusting for inflation, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises at USD 1.08 billion and The Dark Knight at USD 1 billion.
His 2023 film Oppenheimer ended its theatrical run at around USD 975 million.
IMAX has also played a major role in The Odyssey's success. The film has earned USD 147.3 million domestically through IMAX screenings, making it the company's highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
China remains a major market yet to open for the film, with The Odyssey scheduled to release there on Friday.
Hollywood heads for strongest post-pandemic summer
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey has helped Hollywood record its strongest box-office year since the pandemic.
According to Rentrak, ticket sales are currently 18.5% ahead of last year. Five films have already crossed USD 1 billion worldwide, the highest number since 2019.
The other billion-dollar releases are Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Rentrak expects overall summer theatrical revenue to cross USD 4 billion on Monday. Summer box-office revenue has already reached around USD 3.985 billion through Sunday, just USD 14.8 million short of the milestone.
Since the pandemic, the only summer to cross USD 4 billion was in 2023, when Barbie and Oppenheimer drove strong theatre attendance.
Comedies struggle against blockbusters
Two comedies attempted to attract audiences away from the major blockbusters but had modest openings.
One Night Only, directed by Will Gluck, opened with USD 5.7 million. The romantic comedy, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, is set in a world where premarital sex is outlawed except for one night each year.
The Universal release was made for around USD 25 million. It received a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although audiences gave it a stronger "B+" CinemaScore.
Super Troopers 3, the third instalment in the comedy franchise from Broken Lizard, opened with USD 4 million to finish fourth.
