Karkala, Apr 10: An elderly man who sustained severe burn injuries after being caught in flames while attempting to douse a fire in his plantation succumbed at the hospital in Nitte village’s Bajekala on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Jayakar Shetty (80), a resident of ‘Shivapooja’ house in Bajekala. Following the incident, personnel from the Karkala Fire Station carried out a rescue operation and shifted him to KMC Hospital, Manipal for treatment. However, he did not respond to treatment and passed away later that night.

According to reports, a fire accidentally broke out in Jayakar Shetty’s plantation on Thursday. The plantation, which had coconut and arecanut trees, quickly caught fire as the flames spread rapidly through the dried vegetation. Acting swiftly, Jayakar Shetty attempted to put out the fire himself but was trapped due to the intensity of the flames.

Noticing the incident, his wife Pushpa raised an alarm, prompting local resident Sadananda Hegde and others to rush to the spot. By then, parts of Jayakar Shetty’s body had already been severely burnt. Fire personnel responded in time, rescued him, and shifted him to the hospital by ambulance.

Karkala fire station officer Albert Monis, assistant station officer Chandrashekhar, and staff members Achyuth Karkera, Hariprasad, Basavaraj, and Lokesh participated in the operation and brought the fire under control.
