BJP launches nationwide push for Women’s Reservation Bill

New Delhi, Apr 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an intensive nationwide campaign to build momentum around the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, assigning Union Ministers and party leaders key responsibilities across regions.

Party sources said Chief Ministers in BJP-ruled states have been directed to actively participate in outreach programmes, while cadres have been mobilised to strengthen support for the proposed women’s reservation legislation.

As part of the campaign, the BJP will hold press conferences in 100 major cities between April 11 and 13, along with townhall events in 15 cities. The party’s Mahila Morcha will also launch street-level outreach drives from April 11.

Further, a ‘Nari Shakti Padayatra’ is scheduled to be organised in every Lok Sabha constituency on April 15 and 16 to amplify awareness and public engagement.

The development comes after the Union Cabinet approved a draft amendment to the 2023 Act, proposing to link its implementation to the 2011 Census instead of the delimitation process. The legislation aims to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies from 2029.

The proposed delimitation exercise is expected to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816 seats, with around one-third — approximately 273 seats — reserved for women, including within Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories.

A Special Session of Parliament has been convened next week to take up the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged women across the country to support the legislation and appeal to political representatives for its passage, stating that the reform cannot be delayed further.
