Drunk driving case filed after car hits ambulance in Verna

Vasco, Apr 11: Verna Police have registered a case against a 33-year-old woman for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and crashing into an ambulance on the Verna–Pirni bypass on Thursday night.

The accused, identified as Zenobia Zora Chaco, a resident of St Jacinto Island, was reportedly driving in a rash and negligent manner when her car collided with an ambulance around 9:15 pm.

According to police, the ambulance was transporting three newborns along with their mothers from Goa Medical College to South Goa District Hospital at the time of the accident.

Verna Police Inspector Anand Shirodkar stated that the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred.
Police have booked her under multiple provisions, including Sections 281 (rash and negligent driving), 125 and 125(a) (acts endangering life and causing injury) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving.

Fortunately, the newborns and their mothers were unharmed. However, paramedical staff in the ambulance suffered minor injuries. The collision also caused traffic congestion on both sides of the busy bypass road.
