Mangaluru: Laser-based speed gun cameras deployed on highways to curb violations

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Apr 23: In a bid to curb traffic rule violations, especially overspeeding on highways passing through the city and its outskirts, the police department has already implemented several measures, including surveillance cameras. Taking it a step further, laser-based speed gun cameras have now been introduced, tightening monitoring of vehicle movement.

The use of this device comes amid a rise in accident cases. Speed limits and traffic signboards have been installed on National Highways 66 and 73. Accident-prone black spots have also been identified and marked with signboards. To control overspeeding on major roads, traffic police have now adopted advanced ‘laser track’ speed gun camera technology. Vehicles moving on roads are monitored through these cameras, and e-challans with photographic evidence are issued against violators.

The device uses laser beams directed at vehicles to instantly calculate their speed. If a vehicle exceeds the prescribed limit or violates traffic rules, details such as vehicle image, registration number, time, and speed are automatically recorded. Video evidence is also captured, providing strong proof for imposing fines. One of the key features of this device is its ability to detect speeds of vehicles even from a distance. It is more accurate compared to handheld speed guns.

In accident-prone areas, police personnel themselves operate these devices mounted on tripods to check speed. Vehicles exceeding the limit are tracked on the spot, and penalty messages are sent to drivers. The device helps in registering cases with concrete evidence. According to traffic police, it is very difficult for violators to escape detection using this system.

Where are the speed limits displayed??? Only after being caught the driver knows why The practice of driving at night with lights beams must be penalised. Grand Prix style driving by busses though legal must be stopped.

Following Arab Countries or westurn are fine. But whether you are installing many boards of speed limit and mentioning k.m. is a question mark. One or two are not enough. On a regular distance you have to mention speed limit in k.m.. please install limit atleast each two miles one sign board.

First the police should ensure that the highway roads are engineered properly. The turn to the service road leading to BMS Hotel and D-Mart and Derebail need to be properly marked. It is a pathetic sight. The road coming from A. J. Hospital joining the highway does not have any marking, vehicles join the highway traffic without stopping. The sign is more than 50m from the shoulder. The traffic lights at Nantoor Circle should be working. Presently it is a circus with many police ringmasters who always manage to block the circle. one says stop the other says go and the buses do not listen to anyone and manage to kill at least 1 person a day. The traffic police need to have proper training, not just stopping any vehicle anywhere and managing to block the road causing a nuisance.

Speed cameras on highway?. Highways are made for speed. In UAE the speed limit on the first track is 160 kmph, second 140 kmph, then 100 & 80. Here in some places it 40kmph. this is meaningless & money making racket under radar, it should not be less than 80kmph.
