Washington, Apr 29: King Charles III used his ongoing state visit to the United States to reaffirm strong ties between the two nations, delivering a rare address to a joint session of the US Congress and emphasising unity despite recent tensions.

The four-day visit, his first to the US since his coronation in 2023, coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. During his speech, Charles described the US-UK relationship as resilient, saying the partnership remains strong despite differences.

“Our partnership was born out of dispute, but is no less strong for it,” he said, highlighting shared democratic values and long-standing cooperation.

The visit comes amid strains in relations linked to policies of US President Donald Trump, including tariff disputes, criticism of NATO, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite these challenges, both leaders struck a cordial tone, exchanging praise during a formal state dinner at the White House.

Trump commended the king’s address, calling it “great,” while also joking about the bipartisan applause Charles received in Congress.

The British monarch became only the second to address the US Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. His speech drew applause across party lines, though reactions varied on issues such as NATO and faith.

During the address, Charles avoided directly mentioning the Iran conflict but stressed the importance of peace, interfaith harmony, and international cooperation. He also voiced strong support for Ukraine, calling for continued backing to secure a “just and lasting peace.”

The king also referred to a recent attempted attack near a Washington event attended by top US leaders, condemning such acts of violence and expressing solidarity with the American leadership, including First Lady Melania Trump.

The visit featured ceremonial elements blending British and American traditions, including a formal white-tie state dinner attended by prominent figures from politics, business, and sports. Among those present were technology leaders such as Tim Cook and Jeff Bezos, as well as golfer Rory McIlroy.

In a lighter moment, King Charles presented Trump with a historic bell from a World War II-era submarine named HMS Trump, drawing laughter during his toast.

The visit, marked by symbolism and diplomacy, underscored efforts by both nations to maintain a strong alliance amid evolving global challenges.
