Mumbai, May 2: A serious hit-and-run incident has surfaced in the Powai area of Mumbai, where a speeding tempo struck three road workers and fled the scene, leaving them critically injured.

The incident occurred in Morarji Nagar, where labourers had been deployed for sewer cleaning work by a contractor engaged by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. According to preliminary findings, the workers were carrying out their duties when the vehicle rammed into them at high speed. The driver reportedly escaped without stopping to assist the injured.

All three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, Powai Police have registered a case against an unidentified driver and initiated a search operation to track him down. The contractor associated with the work has been detained for questioning as authorities examine whether proper safety measures were in place at the site.

In a separate incident a day earlier, a woman lost her life in a similar hit-and-run near Majiwada Junction in Thane. The victim, who worked as housekeeping staff at a residential complex, was attempting to cross the busy Mumbai–Nashik Highway while heading home to Mumbra.

Police said she had reached the Nashik-bound side of the road while looking for transport but misjudged the speed of oncoming traffic. She was hit by a tempo whose driver also fled. The woman was taken to Kalwa Government Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead, according to senior inspector Manjusha Bhongale of Kapurbawdi Police Station.

Traffic data underscores the growing concern: hit-and-run cases accounted for 38% of all fatal road accidents in Mumbai in 2023, with pedestrians making up more than half of the victims.
