Mangalore, Mar 11:
'Lankesh 77', a programme to mark the 77th birth anniversary of noted journalist, writer, and cine director, the late P Lankesh, was organized at St Aloysius College Auditorium on Sunday March 11.

Writer Devanuru Mahadeva addressing the gathering said that Lankesh worked with focus and had the talent of giving attention to details. He further said that there was a need for rejuvenating cultural prosperity in the state at a time when it is mired in corruption.

Coming down heavily on the BJP-led state government, he said that though the party came to power reciting the mantra of 'change' and promising to preserve the culture of the land, the ministers indulged in mining and misused their power. "We voters should express our angst, or else we will be as good as living corpses," he warned, and pointed out that Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha by-election is an opportunity for the people to relieve the state from the corruption mess.

Writer Gowri Lankesh presided. She said that Lankesh had always asserted that journalism was meant for awakening, teaching and entertaining, to which she added another ingredient - 'to bring about a change in society'. She said that journalism should join hands with activism, which should not be Bangalore-centric. People need to respond in a rational way, she added.

Suresh Bhat Bakrabailu unveiled the books ‘Panchali’, ‘Nanna Preethiya Bharatha’ ‘Helutthene Kela’ on the occasion.

In the first session of the day, on the topic ‘problems being faced by the coast’, to be presided over by Sara Abubakar, G Rajashekhar will begin the proceedings, followed by main lectures on the subject by Vittal Hegde and Bhoomi Gowda. Dr H S Anupama, Hayavadana Upadhyaya, P V Mohan, and Vasudeva Belle, will comment on the subject by way of response.

The second session on ‘anxieties of Karnataka’ will be chaired by Rajaram Tolpady. K Phaniraj will present the issue, followed by addresses by Dr H Vasu and B M Basheer. Aravind Chokkady, Vasant Bannadi, and Vivekananda Tandela will be giving their responses.

Lydia the split after the death of Lankesh was nothing but due to the struggle for power and money. Though Gowry would would deny it the facts cannot be negated entirely. No doubt Lankesh was a good writer and dramatist and some of his novels, books and dramas confirm this point. But what Dr Kiran Acharya has said that Lankesh Patrike thrived on its brand of journalism which was nothing but yellow journalism. May be for survival he had to do it. But fact is a fact which cannot be masked.

Dr Kiran Acharya is an ignorant person. Lankesh never went after money but he was responsible for so many political changes and revolutions in Karnataka. His writings kindle fire within. Also, his literary movement is praiseworthy.

    People,

I have read most(if not all) of the issues of "Lankesh Patrike" when he was editing it.

I liked his style of writing,,, not nercessarily agree with him many time's...

He had written many memorable articles about late R Gundu Rao, S Bangarappa and M Veerappa Moily(in 1980's)....

He was calling Gundu "Gum" Bangarappa "Bum" and Moily as "Moily Mahatma"....

Best article he wrote abount Gundu Rao was, when he lost power(1983)... saying "Sotavara Bagge Kruravaga Koodadu...."...I still remember him for that.

He also wrote atleast twice about GA Bawa, then Inspector and ACP of Bangalore ,,, and ridiculed him for what he is... also he wrote how Bawa went to Yeddy's house when he was Leader of Opposition to explain something with perhaps Ravi Belagere and how Yeddy showed him his correct place(Get Out)...

Bawa could pull wool on public's eye's not on late P Lankesh's eyes..

I miss fearless articles of late P Lankesh,,, I am of the opinion,,, none of his children could match him.

    Regards,

    Langoolacharya.

I can only laugh at Kiran Acharya. You are a doctor by profession and it is totally unbecoming of a doctor to pass such comments on Lankesh, a journalist like him can never born again.

This is a glorification of a man responsible for the birth of yellow journalism-blackmail journalism in Kannada through his tabloid. He also is responsible for grooming a generation of writers, whose aim was to malign upper castes. The list of "dignitaries" on the dais and photo of "dignitaries" off the dais says it all!

Would have liked if P L Indrajeet too was at stage. Father's name at least should not put children at distance. Anyways, great initiative by Gouri.

His imaginary 'Nimmy' was virtually a shock. He had the charisma of creating an aura.

Sad that Lankesh split after his passing away. May his soul rest in peace
