Udupi, May 26: A total of 47,709 traffic rule violations were detected within a week through newly installed advanced speed radar cameras operating at six locations across Udupi district. Of these, challans have already been issued in 243 cases.
According to police data, from May 21 to 26, as many as 3,99,319 vehicles were monitored by the speed radar camera system. Among the violations recorded were 12,440 cases of not wearing seat belts, 11,509 cases of riding without helmets, 2,783 instances of wrong-side driving, 2,438 cases of triple riding, 2,346 heavy motor vehicle (HMV) speed violations, and 1,110 other speed-related offences.


Police have already issued challans for several violations, including 29 cases at Trasi in Gangolli, 36 at Nayakanakatte in Byndoor, 35 at Thekkatte in Kota, 42 at Dandatheertha in Kaup, 59 at Uchila in Padubidri and 34 at Doopadakatte in Karkala, PSI Ajjal Ibrahim of the Udupi District Control Room informed.
The speed radar cameras are directly linked to the district control room, where officials are monitoring vehicle movement round-the-clock. Once a traffic violation is detected, digital evidence is generated instantly and challans are prepared and sent by post to the registered address of the vehicle owner.
Vehicle owners are required to pay the penalty amount by visiting any police station in Udupi district within seven days of receiving the challan.
Officials stated that the radar cameras are not limited to detecting over-speeding alone. They can also capture various traffic violations such as triple riding, failure to wear helmets or seat belts, use of mobile phones while driving, wrong-side driving and other offences.
