Lucknow, May 30: Electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh are set to face higher power bills after the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited decided to levy an additional surcharge under the fuel adjustment charge mechanism.
The move is expected to increase electricity bills by nearly 10 per cent, adding to the financial burden on households, commercial establishments and other categories of consumers.
According to an order issued by UPPCL, the additional amount will be recovered in the upcoming billing cycle and will be reflected in electricity bills issued from June onwards. Consumers will be required to pay the surcharge separately over and above the existing electricity tariff.

Officials said the surcharge is being imposed to offset rising fuel and power procurement costs incurred by electricity distribution companies. Under the fuel adjustment charge mechanism, utilities are permitted to recover fluctuations in fuel expenses and power purchase costs from consumers.
The decision comes amid growing complaints of power cuts and supply disruptions in several parts of the state, particularly during the peak summer season when electricity demand remains high.
Under the revised billing structure, the increase in monthly electricity expenditure will vary depending on the level of consumption and the tariff category applicable to individual consumers.
Consumer groups have expressed concern over the additional financial burden, noting that households are already dealing with rising living costs. Many consumers have also questioned the timing of the surcharge, citing recurring complaints of power outages and inadequate supply in several districts.
Defending the decision, UPPCL stated that the surcharge is being levied in accordance with regulatory provisions and is necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of electricity distribution operations.
With the revised bills scheduled to be issued from June, consumers across Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience the impact of the increased charges in the coming weeks.
