Mangaluru, May 30: Former Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar on Saturday stressed the importance of intellectual and ideological integrity in public life, warning that democracy faces serious challenges when political discourse loses its ideological foundation and becomes driven by narrow interests.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the release of the second edition of the Kannada book Karavaliya Rakta-Kanniru at a programme organised by Akhila Bharatiya Prakashana in Mangaluru.

In a thought-provoking address on the prevailing political and social climate, Kumar likened the atmosphere surrounding elections to a raging fire.
He said social and political tensions often intensify as elections approach, with some individuals seeking to benefit from such situations rather than resolve them.
Emphasising the responsibilities of leadership, he said leaders must possess both the intent and commitment to address people's concerns. He observed that democratic institutions are weakened when politics loses its ideological moorings and public life is increasingly influenced by vested interests.
“When intellectual and ideological integrity decline within political parties and among leaders, democratic values face serious challenges,” he said.
Referring to Karavaliya Rakta-Kanniru, Kumar said the book captures painful realities and deeply human experiences. “After reading this book, it is difficult to remain untouched by the emotions it carries,” he remarked, appreciating the author's efforts in documenting significant social issues.
The book highlights various social realities, human emotions and experiences from the coastal region, offering readers a thought-provoking perspective on contemporary issues. Through its narrative, it seeks to create awareness and encourage reflection on societal developments.
The programme was presided over by noted thinker and writer Prof K Phaniraj, while social activist Muneer Katipalla attended as a special guest.
Senior writer D Devaraj, journalist Aakshata Munchadkat and journalist Prashanth Lelekar were also present.
The event witnessed the participation of writers, journalists, social activists and members of the public, leading to discussions on literature, society and the role of intellectual engagement in contemporary public life.
