Massachusetts, Jun 14: Scotland ended a 28-year FIFA World Cup goal drought with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Haiti in their Group C encounter at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts on Sunday.

Midfielder John McGinn scored the decisive goal in the first half, helping Scotland secure all three points and move to the top of the group standings.

The strike carried added significance as it was Scotland's first goal in a FIFA World Cup since Craig Burley found the net during the 1998 tournament, when Scotland drew with Norway in the group stage.

In another Group C fixture, Brazil began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Brazil fell behind early before star forward Vinícius Júnior equalised in the 32nd minute to rescue a point for the South American giants. The encounter was one of the most anticipated matches of the opening round, with sixth-ranked Brazil taking on seventh-ranked Morocco.

Earlier in the day, Group B rivals Qatar and Switzerland played out a 1-1 draw at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in California.

Switzerland opened the scoring before Qatar mounted a late comeback to level the contest and earn a valuable point.

Meanwhile, Group D action saw Australia take on Turkey, while Germany are scheduled to face Curaçao in a Group E fixture later in the day.

The results mark an exciting start to the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup, with several teams looking to gain early momentum in the group stage.
