Trump-backed Mike Collins wins Georgia Republican Senate nomination

Washington, Jun 17: Republican Congressman Mike Collins has secured the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat from Georgia, defeating political newcomer Derek Dooley in a runoff election.

According to U.S. media reports, Collins, who had the backing of President Donald Trump, emerged victorious after finishing first in the May 19 primary. He will now face incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in what is expected to be one of the most closely watched Senate contests of the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump endorsed Collins ahead of the runoff, describing him as a "warrior and winner" who had supported him "from the very beginning." Dooley, a former college football coach, was backed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.

The race is considered crucial for Republicans, who currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate and are seeking to expand their advantage. Georgia and Michigan are viewed as the party's top opportunities to gain seats in states won by Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

However, political analysts believe unseating Ossoff will be a difficult task. Charles Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia, noted that despite being viewed as more liberal than many Georgia voters, Ossoff has built a strong constituent services network and maintains a significant presence across the state.

Ossoff has also established a major fundraising advantage. His campaign has raised approximately $60 million and reported nearly $33 million in cash on hand entering May. In comparison, Collins had raised about $4.9 million through May 27 and reported $1.2 million available for the campaign.

National political groups are already preparing for an expensive battle. The Democratic Senate Majority PAC has reserved $20 million in television advertising in Georgia, while the Republican Senate Leadership Fund has pledged $44 million to help flip the seat.

Control of the Senate will be a major focus of the November midterm elections. Democrats would need a net gain of four seats to reclaim the chamber.

Recent electoral projections have also suggested growing Democratic competitiveness in several states. Political forecasters have shifted North Carolina's open Senate race toward Democrats and classified Alaska and Ohio as toss-up contests.

Democrats are fielding high-profile candidates in key races, including former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, former Alaska Representative Mary Peltola and former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine is considered one of the most vulnerable GOP incumbents heading into the election cycle. Democrats also believe they have opportunities to compete in traditionally Republican states such as Iowa and Texas.

The Georgia contest between Collins and Ossoff is expected to be one of the most expensive and closely fought Senate races in the country as both parties battle for control of Congress.
