Hardik ruled out of England ODIs, Kohli likely to return subject to fitness

New Delhi, Jun 20: India’s star allrounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against England due to a quadriceps injury, while batting superstar Virat Kohli is likely to be included in the squad subject to fitness clearance.

The Indian team for the ODI series, scheduled from July 14 to 19, is expected to be announced soon. The matches will be played at Birmingham, Cardiff and Lord’s.

A BCCI source said Hardik has not yet achieved the required bowling workload and conditioning levels needed for the ODI format and will need more time to regain complete fitness.

Hardik had also missed India’s ongoing home ODI series against Afghanistan due to the injury. The allrounder has been training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru since June 2 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, Kohli is recovering well from a right hamstring injury suffered during the IPL 2026 season while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He will undergo a fitness assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence on June 22.

The 37-year-old batter was sidelined from the Afghanistan ODI series due to the injury. He had suffered the setback after scoring an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls in the IPL final, helping RCB chase down 156 runs against Gujarat Titans and win their second consecutive IPL title.

The BCCI medical team is monitoring Kohli’s recovery, and a final decision on his participation will be taken after the fitness evaluation.

Hardik remains a key part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Selectors have been managing his workload to keep him fit for the 50-over format.
