Mumbai, Jun 21: Veteran actor Anupam Kher has revealed that he was once considered for the iconic role of Mogambo in the cult classic Mr India, but eventually lost the opportunity due to a casting decision influenced by actor Anil Kapoor.
The surprising revelation came during an episode of The Anupam Kher Show – Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai, which featured actress Sonam Kapoor and actor Arjun Kapoor as guests.
Recalling the incident, Kher said he was informed by screenwriter Javed Akhtar that veteran actor Amrish Puri would ultimately portray the memorable antagonist in the film.

He admitted feeling disappointed at the time after learning that he would no longer be a part of the project.
Over the years, Kher and Anil Kapoor developed a close friendship, and during one of their conversations, Anil reportedly confessed that he had played a role in the decision that kept Kher out of the film.
Responding to the revelation, Anil jokingly told Kher that it turned out to be a good decision because Amrish Puri delivered an unforgettable performance as Mogambo.
Mogambo remains one of the most celebrated villains in Indian cinema, and his iconic dialogue, “Mogambo Khush Hua”, continues to be deeply embedded in popular culture decades after the film's release.
Directed by Shekhar Kapur and jointly produced by Boney Kapoor and Surinder Kapoor under the Narsimha Enterprises banner, Mr India featured Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri in the lead roles.
The film follows the story of Arun Verma, portrayed by Anil Kapoor, a kind-hearted violinist and philanthropist who discovers an invisibility device. To manage his financial difficulties, he rents part of his house to journalist Seema Sahni, played by Sridevi, and gradually falls in love with her.
Meanwhile, the ruthless Mogambo, portrayed by Amrish Puri, hatches plans to conquer India, setting the stage for one of Hindi cinema's most memorable battles between good and evil.
Over the years, Mr India has attained cult status and is widely regarded as one of the landmark films in the history of Hindi cinema, remembered for its unique storyline, memorable performances and timeless characters.
