AMMA president Shwetha Menon, 17-member panel resign after row over accounts

Kochi, Jun 22: Malayalam film actors’ association Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) president Shwetha Menon and 17 members of the executive committee resigned from their posts on Sunday following a heated dispute during the association’s annual general body meeting over the annual report and account statements.

The development comes amid growing differences within AMMA over various issues in recent times.

During the annual general meeting, several members raised objections over the lack of clarity in the income and expenditure details mentioned in the annual report presented by the association’s general secretary Kuku Parameswaran. The issue reportedly led to hours-long arguments among members.

As tensions escalated, Shwetha Menon announced her decision to step down as president. Subsequently, the entire executive committee led by her also submitted their resignations.

“All executive committee members have resigned. I have also resigned from my membership and stepped away from the association,” Shwetha Menon told media persons.

Explaining the reason behind the accounting issues, she alleged that the association’s treasurer had gone missing, making it difficult to submit the accounts for the concerned period.

“When AMMA staff were removed from service, a complaint was filed, but the issue was not resolved. Instead, the treasurer went missing, due to which we could not submit the accounts of that period,” she said.

Reacting to the development, state Culture Minister P. C. Vishnunath said the matter was an internal issue of the association and the government would not intervene.
