Udupi, July 5: What is normally discarded as kitchen waste is being rapidly transformed into high-value organic fertiliser at Vandse Grama Panchayat in Udupi district, where Black Soldier Fly larvae are quietly driving a scientific waste-to-wealth revolution.
These tiny “workers” neither draw salaries nor take breaks. Yet they operate round the clock, converting household organic waste into nutrient-rich manure and enabling the village to adopt a model of sustainable waste management through the Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) unit.
Unlike conventional dumping yards plagued by foul odour, flies and health hazards, the Vandse SLRM facility presents a strikingly different system.

Organic waste collected from households is scientifically segregated and fed to Black Soldier Fly larvae, which consume large volumes of biodegradable waste within hours and convert it into high-quality organic fertiliser.
The manure produced through this biological process reportedly contains nearly twice the nutrients found in conventional vermicompost. It has also become a strong market product, fetching between Rs 300 and Rs 400 per kilogram.
Officials and local workers describe the insects as “nature’s fastest recyclers”, as they dramatically reduce waste volumes while producing commercially viable fertiliser.
The initiative extends beyond waste processing. The entire SLRM campus has been developed as an integrated eco-system, combining waste management with beekeeping, livestock rearing and poultry farming, turning the facility into a multi-income rural model.
Rather than treating waste as a burden, Vandse Grama Panchayat has successfully converted it into a sustainable revenue stream. The project has already received multiple accolades for its innovative approach to solid waste management and its successful implementation of biotechnology at the village level.
The model is now being seen as an inspiration for other gram panchayats across Karnataka, showcasing how decentralised, science-based systems can address urban and rural waste challenges effectively.
Overall, the Vandse SLRM unit has demonstrated that tonnes of daily biodegradable waste can be processed without foul smell or environmental pollution. More importantly, it has proved that waste can be turned into a consistent source of income.
With this pioneering initiative, Vandse has opened a new chapter in eco-friendly waste management, where Black Soldier Fly larvae are quietly powering a cleaner, greener village and turning everyday garbage into what many now call “green gold”.
