Port-au-Prince, Jul 8: After being deported to Haiti by the administration of former US President Joe Biden in September 2021, Maxin Orelien made the difficult decision to leave his homeland once again just a month later in search of a better future.

A construction worker by profession, Orelien had spent nearly $3,000 to travel to the United States, hoping to build what he described as "a better life."

His first attempt, however, coincided with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Biden administration was rapidly deporting thousands of newly arrived migrants under emergency public health measures. Many were returned to their home countries in shackles without being allowed to seek asylum.

Despite the setback, Orelien chose to risk the dangerous journey once more, determined to pursue another opportunity in the United States in the hope of securing a safer and more stable future.
